Color one of the most important facets of our lives and sometimes our defining identification. The colors we wear, what does it say about us? What color gets our heart rate up and probably feels like love? Do parents still tell teen children what colors they may not wear? Lee Rosenberg, high-school art teacher is back with some of his students to talk about the importance of color in our daily lives. Can you tell where a person may be from by the colors he or she wears? Yes, often. These Oakland California art students tell what colors are East Bay (I never knew there were East Bay colors).

What is one of the first questions you ask a new friend or a budding romantic partner? What are the colors of your team, the colors of your flag,  your school colors a pledge of loyalty (wear the other team’s colors to a ballgame and risk your safety). The acceptable wardrobe colors and prints are not what your grandma would have let you out the front door wearing. What was once pretty much a visual crime is now just chic as can be. Color decision takes up a lot of our thought and time and for good reason.

What does it mean when a culture has no word for blue? Is there a reason men so often wear blue shirts? Yup. Blue for loyalty.  Red for courage. White for purity and virginity – hence the bridal gown in many cultures. Royal purple. Why assign colors to emotions, yellow often referring to cowardice and green defining envy?

See what some of these art students and Mr. Rosenberg have to say about it all. It is an endless and fascinating subject. Bonus, see the exceptional and sophisticated  paintings they are working on in class. Love letters a natural medium for artists.
